About Early Childhood Screening

Early Childhood Screening is a no-cost check of how a child is growing, moving, talking, seeing, hearing and behaving. Screening seeks to answer the question “Does this child need a closer look?”

Screening helps discover needs and potential concerns and connect families to resources to address those concerns.

Who can complete early childhood screening? Children who are between the ages of 3 and kindergarten entry.

  • Earlier is better! The best age to have your child screened is at age three and a half. All results are based on your child's exact age on the day of screening.

Where should I complete screening? All school districts offer early childhood screening. It is recommended you look into your resident district but it can be completed in any district. Early childhood screening only needs to be completed one time before kindergarten entry.

Early Childhood Screening is a free and simple check of how your child is growing, developing and learning. A trained professional will check:

  • Vision and hearing
  • Height and weight
  • Immunizations
  • Large and small muscles
  • Thinking, language and communication skills
  • Social and emotional development (via parent-completed questionnaire)

You will also be able to talk about the screening results with a professional and discuss any concerns you may have.
